Palsar Givati (Special Reconnaissance Unit) was established in 1983 under the command of Lt. Col. Ilan Sofer. The unit specializes in reconnaissance, navigation, observation, routing, and guidance, as well as in the detection and identification of chemical warfare materials. Its original purpose was to provide services in these fields at the divisional level, supply tactical intelligence, and lead forces, commanders, and logistics from point to point.

Unit members undergo specialized training in counter-terrorism warfare. Since its establishment, the unit has participated in numerous ambushes and special operations as part of its activity in Judea and Samaria, the Gaza Strip, and the security zone in Southern Lebanon.
